GLP-1 For Weight Management

GLP-1 For Weight Management

GLP-1 For Weight Management

Semaglutide is a once-weekly injectable medication that has become an effective treatment option for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or those who are overweight with weight-related medical conditions. It belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists, which mimic a naturally occurring hormone that helps regulate appetite, food intake, and blood sugar levels.

How Semaglutide works

GLP-1 For Weight Management

GLP-1 For Weight Management

Semaglutide promotes weight loss by:

  • Reducing appetite and hunger.
  • Increasing feelings of fullness after meals.
  • Slowing stomach emptying, which helps patients stay satisfied longer.
  • Reducing food cravings and overall calorie intake.
  • Improving blood sugar regulation in many patients.

Unlike stimulant weight-loss medications, semaglutide works by enhancing the body’s natural appetite-regulating pathways.

Who May Benefit

GLP-1 For Weight Management

Common Side Effects

Semaglutide may be appropriate for adults who have:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater, or
  • A BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater with a weight-related condition such as:
    • High blood pressure
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • High cholesterol
    • Obstructive sleep apnea
    • Cardiovascular disease

Treatment should always be combined with a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and lifestyle modifications.

Expected Results

Clinical studies have shown that many patients lose approximately 10–15% of their body weight, with some achieving even greater weight loss when combined with sustained lifestyle changes. Weight loss typically occurs gradually over several months.

  • A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
  • Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)
  • A history of severe allergic reaction to semaglutide

Patients should discuss their full medical history with their healthcare provider, particularly if they have:

  • Gallbladder disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant

Ongoing Treatment

Who Shouldn't Take GLP-1's

Weight management is a long-term process. Many patients require continued treatment to maintain weight loss, as appetite often returns when the medication is discontinued. Regular follow-up with a healthcare provider helps monitor progress, manage side effects, and adjust treatment as needed.

Benefits Beyond Weight Loss

In addition to weight reduction, semaglutide may help improve:

  • Blood sugar control
  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Overall cardiovascular health in appropriate patients
  • Quality of life and physical functioning
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
